Erigena (ca. 815–877)
Johannes Scotus Eriugena (also Johannes Scotus Erigena, Johannes Scottus Eriugena, John the Scot), was an Irish theologian, Neoplatonist philosopher, and poet. He is known for having translated and made commentaries upon the work of Pseudo-Dionysius.

There’s an amusing story about Erigena at the French court, told by William of Malmesbury. The king having asked, What separates a sot from a Scot? Erigena replied, Only a table!
